Today’s topic: Change Blindness
We have to pay attention to many things in our lives. We detect changes that occur.
Are we always able to notice changes?
Sometimes we are very poor at detecting changes. Researchers wanted to know what sort of changes we can detect. They created an experiment by having an actor ask people for directions. As they talked, the actor was replaced by another actor. The switch was hidden from view when two workers carrying a large board walked by. The people were asked if they noticed anything wrong.
This is what they found:
People were not able to notice that the person they talked to was someone else.
Keep your eye open for opportunities; you might notice something no one else sees!
My husband found a neighborhood boy sitting on the front porch crying. My husband asked the boy “What’s the matter, honey?” “It’s my father,” the boy kept sobbing as he continued with his story. “He hit his finger with a hammer.” “Your father hit his finger with a hammer. I see. But why are you crying?”……

Annie asks Edward about his relationship with his brother, Ethan. Edward says he used to resent Ethan as a kid, partially because he had to use many things that Ethan previously owned. Edward understands why now. He has learned to deal with the situation and move on.

Does a list change our decision making? Yes it does, we are more likely to pick the first choice on the list. Researchers created 10 features about tents. They had features about being waterproof and being comfortable. They made many lists. Each list had a different order of tents. Participants were told to choose one of the tents based on their features.
