This I Thought was True
Chameleons Change Colors According To Their Surroundings

Chameleons change colors according to their surroundings. This I thought was true. As a kid, I was told that chameleons change colors in order to blend in and hide from their predators. Even the Disney movie “Monsters, Inc.” had a scene with a chameleon practicing its color-changing skills in front of different backgrounds. This, I used to believe. Now, I know that there are species capable of changing colors in order to provide camouflage, but that’s not why chameleons change colors. The real factors behind chameleons’ color changing are light, temperature, and mood. They turn lighter under the sun to reflect the light. They turn darker when it’s cold to absorb more heat. Attraction toward a female chameleon and anger both bring out their brightest colors.
