This I Want to Know
Hsinchu Gong-Wan

Like rice noodles, gong-wan is another best-known delicacy of Hsinchu. The pork meatballs got its name “Gong-Wan” because its production process requires more “beating” (which is what “gong” means in Taiwanese) than that of regular meatballs. People not only enjoy pork meatball soup in restaurants, but also purchase them as takeout food or gifts. Nowadays, manufacturers use modern machines to produce gong-wan and sell them through the island-wide marketing network.
